The ABCs of Advertising Advertisements exist in most media -- print, broadcast, skywriting, sandwich boards, and especially the internet. They include many elements -- words, photographs, illustrations, music, animation, and more. They use almost infinitely varied approaches -- spokespeople, sex, testimonials, animals, statistics, glamor, babies, snobbishness, slang, baby animals . . . occasionally even facts. Despite their differences, all ads have to do the same things to be successful. What things, you may ask? Here they are: Announce the product (or service) to the marketplace. Build company and brand name recognition. Create a position in the buyer's mind. Develop a need for the perceived benefits of the product. Effect action -- call, fax, e-mail, log on . . . and BUY!
